Elias Stich, our exchange student, goes HOME

We barely got a chance to get to know this fine young man.

You remember Elias? Our foreign exchange student from Germany?

He returned home suddenly because of the Coronavirus Crisis. But now he's an honorary member of the LSRC.

Hi Michael,

I am trying to do as many sports as possible as long as possible. I am studying for my med-school test. I also cook, help around the house and spend time with my family.

The whole state of Bavaria has strong travel restrictions due to COVID-19. Public life has almost stopped completely.  Going to work, seeing a doctor, going to the pharmacy and doing grocery shopping are just about everything you are allowed to do.

We have to get adjusted to a life with less freedom. [Don't we all, Elias!]

I go out as much as I need to. I did not get put under a [14-day] quarantine (surprisingly). I miss Rotary, my Host family and all the good people with lots of positive energy.

Attached to this email you can find some pictures of my new, (like my great grandma called it) Man-ly hairstyle.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
[with kindest regards]
Elias Stich

Interact Club at Highlander Way Middle School

March was reading month and on March 9th the kids made bookmarks to encourage reading. Here Steve LaCommare creates a bookmark next to a middle schooler who thinks School Sucks.  Rotarians Donna G and Janet B contributed.

Gleaners Community Food Bank
Jim Gilmore sent out an urgent call for volunteers to help sort food and man the store at Gleaners on March 23. Rotarians responded! All across the country, food banks have been stretched to the limits more than any time before because of C19. Jamie Scott and many others answered that call. Below is Sally, Jamie's Nursing Director at The Willows.

Denise Leduc reports that the team ther instituted 66 new food distributions using a drive-thru model. They have reached more than 20,000 households with more than 600,000 pounds of food. And thousands of emergency food boxes have been packed and distributed to area senior citizens.  Those who are hungry and check this link for available food resources: www.gcfb.org/community-distribution-sites

Face Masks for Healthcare Workers
A call also went out in the last two weeks for homemade masks to serve the myriad of healthcare providers who help the residents of The Willows with physical therapy, occupational therapy, and medical checkups among other functions. Thanks to Donna O and many others, more than 30 masks were sewn and delivered.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU!
Jamie Scott, executive director of The Willows at Howell.
This week’s feature is all about Jamie Scott, executive director of The Willows, a Trinity senior living community in Howell. They are putting the finishing touches on a new memory care center.

Where are you from?
Brighton

What was your first job?
I was a golf cart girl at Oak Pointe Country Club.

When you're not working, how do you like to spend your time?
I love to go up north to my cabin in Manistee, and I love kayaking!

What's your dream job?
I’ve always thought it would be great to be a photographer for National Geographic!

What qualities do you value in the people with whom you spend time?
I like to have people around me who make me laugh and keep things light-hearted. I tend to be too serious sometimes!

If you suddenly won a million dollars and did not have to work, what would you do with all your free time?
I would travel  everywhere on my bucket list! Ireland & Scotland would probably be first!

Any upcoming travel plans?
Hahahahahahahaha……no.

INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION
The COVID-19 pandemic is having a global impact that affects all of us. Rotarians like you are people of action especially in a time of crisis, and Rotary is uniquely prepared to help communities around the world.

Clubs and districts can apply for Rotary disaster response grants to support COVID-19 relief efforts. These grants can be used to provide supplies and medical care and to support rebuilding efforts.

The Rotary Foundation Trustees recently approved placing $1 million in our Disaster Response Fund to make these grants immediately available for applications related to COVID-19. To make sure these grants can remain available, we’re asking for personal contributions to the Disaster Response Fund. Your contribution will support grants that help Rotarians care for and protect people in their local communities and around the world. Make a gift to the Disaster Response Fund now.

Thank you for your dedication and service on behalf of Rotary.

Sincerely,

Gary C.K. Huang
Chair, The Rotary Foundation 2019-20
