Due to Covid 19, meetings are NOT being held at the Bennett Center. They are currently conducted via Zoom and/or in public spaces where we can socially distance. Please watch our Facebook page for weekly updates as to location/platform. Thank you!
As with any regular meeting, it is open to members and visitors, so if you have someone you think can benefit, please forward this information to them so they can participate. And remember, this is a LIVE ZOOM meeting. And it may be simulcast on our Facebook Live page for those of you who don't like ZOOMING.
The meeting opens at 7:15am. Use this time to chit-chat, catch up and finish your caffeinated beverage of choice.
Dr. Janet Burns will present Dr. Joe Berninger with the GLP. This is a heartfelt passion of Janet's and she will be bringing to us some of her own experiences with this important outreach.
The Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP) is one of the largest, grass-roots, multi-club, multi-district, projects in the Rotary World. There are over 600 Clubs from 80 districts involved. The GLP currently serves 55,000+ impoverished children by providing textbooks, computers, teacher training, and scholarships.
Since 1997, the GLP has secured more than 40 matching grants and Global Grants from The Rotary Foundation. This past year, the GLP received above $631,000 for work it plans to do in 2020-2021. The GLP has been described as being “exemplary” and the “gold standard” by RI Past President, Ian Riseley.
For the past two years, I have served (and will continue to serve) on the GLP Board of Directors. It has been an inspiring and worthwhile experience.
I have also been very fortunate to participate in the GTP Rotary Tour in 2019 and 2020, with several Rotarians from across the US, Canada, and Guatemala, to see the GLP in action. I can tell you that the GLP is making a difference. It is sustainable and literacy rates are increasing.
“Since founding the organization, I’ve always tried to hire people that were smarter than me. As a result, we’ve developed an all-star team in both the US and Guatemala. One of the best things about working here is that you get to go through life with this solid-gold group of people.” -- Joe Berninger To give you and overview of the GLP, please join me in welcoming theFounder and Executive Director, Joe Berninger, of Cooperative for Education, RI’s partner organization in the GLP, to our meeting on Friday, December 4. He will also share how we can can help him in his mission to end poverty through education in Guatemala. We hope you enjoy this presentation.
Please send ME your pictures and stories about Rotarians in Action!
RING THE BELL FOR SALVATION ARMY ON DECEMBER 5TH We still have THREE Two-Hour timeslots to fill for bell ringing this Saturday. Bring the family. Invite your co-workers. It is fun!
April Dertian, fellow Rotarian and Director of Development and Community Relations for the The Salvation Army of Livingston County (NOT the thrift store!), says that all but seven slots have been filled by volunteer groups the first Saturday in December. This would make it a first for an all-volunteer day of accepting donations for the big red kettles. Donate locally online at their Virtual Bell Ringing Site.
If you can't make it Saturday, choose another day as a volunteer OR as a paid worker ($10/hour). SIGN UP NOW to help ring in the Holiday Season by volunteering to ring a bell and collect money for the Salvation Army. Now more than ever there is a great need to fill the kettles. The holiday season is shorter than normal (only 4 weeks to collect before Christmas).
Join LSRC for a two-hour shift on Saturday, Dec. 5th from 3-5, 5-7 or 7-9 pm. Contact George Watts by email by clicking his name or call/text him at (517) 375-9501.
HELP LCCC DISTRIBUTE CHRISTMAS BLESSING BASKETS
Over the past couple of years, a number of LSRC Club Members have assisted Livingston County Catholic Charities to deliver food and gifts to low-income and homebound senior citizens. Last year the project assisted more than 160 seniors. The Christmas Blessing Project will continue this year, though with some adjustments to maintain the safety of the volunteers and the recipients.
We are in need of volunteers who can deliver the food and gifts on December 10 and 11. You only need to volunteer on one day. If you can assist, contact Katie Holmes at: katie@livingstoncatholiccharities.org Thank you,
It has been many years since a Livingston County Rotary Club Blood Drive Challenge has been held in memory of Doris Longfellow, a Brighton Rotarian and businesswoman. So in 2021, we are issuing the challenge again to all area Rotary Clubs. The Rotary Club Blood Drive will be held Wednesday, January 6th from 11 am to 4:45 pm at the Brighton Community Center.
I will serve as Club liaison to the Red Cross. We will need volunteer to help unload the truck at 10 am, man the registration table, and help reload the truck at 5:30 pm. We need blood drive chairpersons representing every club in the area. Who wants to help save lives and get some free SWAG?
Appointments are MANDATORY under CoViD-19 restrictions. Go to RedCrossBlood.org and search by ZIP Code 48116. We also will have double red machines (Power Reds) there for people who have blood types O-, O+ B- or A-. Give Whole Blood every 3 months (or 3,000 smiles!) -jml
