This week's meeting will be a report about the COVID-19 situation in Livingston County from the President of St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital and the Brighton Health Center, John O'Malley, MSA, MBA, FACHE. He has been with St. Joe's since 2016.
John earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Western Michigan University, his master's degree in health administration from Central Michigan University and his MBA from Wayne State University.
He will tell us how St. Joe's Livingston and Brighton are moving into a "new normal" as they resume services and continuing caring for the community.
Meet one of your fellow Rotarians, Stephen LaCommare, Jr. who has been a member 16 years and just opened his own law firm.
Do you prefer to be called Steve or Stephen? Either or is fine.
Where are you from?St. Clair Shores
How long have you been a Rotarian? What leadership roles have you had? I’ve been a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club for 16 years, been on the board for many years: Past President, Red Cross Blood Drive Chairman, Interact Club liaison, in charge of the annual Pobuda Scholarship Program, and represent the Open World Program.
What’s the Rotary Open World Program? The Open World program brings current and future leaders from post-Soviet Union countries to the United States. Delegates complete an intensive, short-term program that relates to their professional or civic work.
They get a firsthand look at the American system of democracy and free enterprise. Rotary clubs host Open World delegates in their homes. It’s kind of like a Foreign Exchange Student program for professionals but much shorter.
Where did you go to school? University of Michigan, Detroit College of Law
What do you do professionally?Attorney: criminal defense, family law, civil litigation, business law
How long were you with Kizer? What will be your new firm name?
I was with Kizer for 18 years and my new firm name is LaCommare Law.
Personal life: spouse, siblings, children, hobbies, pets?Wife, Katie, two daughters Olivia, age 16 and Drew, 18, who just received a music scholarship to Michigan State University, but would have loved to have gone to U-M instead. And two dogs. I love baseball, reading and cooking.
What’s your favorite book? Or author. Why?My favorite author is Nathaniel Hawthorne. I have read every novel and short story he has ever written. His words speak to me even though they were written more than 150 years ago.
What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?My grandparents were from Sicily and I learned all the Old World recipes from my grandmother.
Of what are you most afraid? That we will never go back to the same physical contact that we shared prior to COVID-19.
Favorite childhood candy or snack? Still like it today? I absolutely love plain potato chips with French onion dip on the side.
If you could have one "do over" in your life, what would you do differently?I would have traveled a great deal more prior to having kids!
