Please welcome Henry Maicki, MD of the West Bloomfield Rotary Club. He has partnered with Orphaned Medical Network International (OMNI) and has worked for the last several years with OMNI in the Republic of Zambia in Southern-Central Africa. They provide health care, education and community development in the atmosphere of Christian faith to orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa.
"Nearly 20 years ago, I joined a medical team organized by Orphan Medical Network International. OMNI reaches out to the poorest of the poor in Zambia and is devoted to sustained improvements in the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children. It provides critical resources such as food, clean water, medical care and education," wrote Dr. Maicki, and OB/GYN in Farmington Hills.
"My trip to Zambia shook me, both personally and professionally, by what I witnessed first-hand," Dr. Maicki continues. "It became very clear that the needs far outweighed available resources to care for these children. I knew right then that I would become a long-time friend of OMNI."
"I’ve returned to Zambia many times since to be a lifeline for as many children as possible. I believe every child deserves a future. I’m proud that the Rotary Club of West Bloomfield has partnered with OMNI in an effort to lift children out of the cycle of poverty. The support that we extend not only raises the spirits and gives hope to these deserving youngsters, it also impacts the hearts of those who give."
Please send ME your pictures and stories about Rotarians in Action no later than Tuesday of every week!
ROTARIANS HELP LCCC DISTRIBUTE CHRISTMAS BLESSING BASKETS
Over the past couple of years, a number of LSRC Club Members have assisted Livingston County Catholic Charities to deliver food and gifts to low-income and homebound senior citizens. Last year the project assisted more than 160 seniors. The Christmas Blessing Project will continue this year, though with some adjustments to maintain the safety of the volunteers and the recipients during this CoViD-19 pandemic.
Who has the most COMMITED Rotary Club in our area? I'm reminded of the story of the chicken and the pig when it comes to providing breakfast. Who's just involved and who's really committed?
You see, the chicken was only involved. She provided the eggs. But the pig was TOTALLY committed. He made the supreme sacrifice by providing the bacon. Who is ready to make a SMALL sacrifice, and commit to rolling up their sleeves and donating blood FIRST in the new year? I issue the challenge again to Livingston County Rotary Clubs and even those just beyond our borders.
The annual Rotary Club Challenge Blood Drive will be held Wednesday, January 6th from 11 am to 4:45 pm at the Brighton Community Center.
Anyone of any age (16 and older) who weighs at least 110 pounds (certain restrictions apply for high-schoolers) and is in general good health, can give blood. It only takes about an hour of your time to help save up to three lives with one donation. We need volunteers help every two hours as temperature takers, registration desk workers, and to serve the juice and cookies.
Appointments are MANDATORY under CoViD-19 restrictions. Go to RedCrossBlood.org and use the Sponsor Code "BrightonRotary". We also will have double red machines (Power Reds) there for people who have blood types O-, O+ B- or A-. Give Whole Blood every 3 months (or every 3,000 smiles!) Call 1-866-236-3276 to discuss whether you can or should not donate blood. O
