THIS WEEK'S SPEAKER IS...
This week's speaker is Katie Wendel speaking on "Advocacy for Elder Americans"!
Katie Wendel, MSW serve as the (relatively) new director of Planning and Advocacy for the Area Agency on Aging I-B. She joined the agency six years ago, holding the positions of advocacy specialist and senior manager of advocacy. As a result of her efforts, increased state funding has enabled thousands more seniors to receive homebound meals and in-home care personal services.

Katie grew up in Franklin Grove, Ill., a town of 1,100. She received a bachelor of science degree in social work from St. Louis University in Missouri and her master of social work degree from Columbia University in New York with a focus on public policy and health, mental health, and disabilities.

Katie plans to continue working on  programs that give older adults the supports and services they need to help them “age in place.”

She’s optimistic. The pandemic raised awareness among legislators about the needs of seniors, and with the 65-plus population growing faster than other demographic groups in Michigan, it is critical to have programs in place, and the funding for them. The department relies on data to argue for its positions, and Katie will continue with that approach.

Before joining the Area Agency on Aging 1-B, Katie worked at Age Options in the Chicago area. She and her husband John, a product development engineer, moved to Michigan when he got a job with Ford. They are the parents  to one young son, Theo.

Katie likes to read and to travel.

LETS PLAY 20 QUESTIONS WITH BRENDA TIPTON

BrendaK Tipton is a past-president of the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club and is the current Governor of Rotary District 6380. Her reign... uh, rule... er...TERM ends June 30th. We thought we would ask her some of the questions you might ask. This will be a multi-part article over the next few weeks.

8. What is one mistaken impression about Rotary that you would like to correct?
It is not only for white older men. This organization is for All who want to take part in Changing Lives, Changing Others and Changing themselves.  I urge all to come visit and experience the bond through service of those at Livingston Sunrise one morning and you will get a firsthand feel of what Rotary is all about.

9. Rotary and Rotary International have so many causes and special interest groups. Name one or two that are close to your ❤.
I’ve been asked that many times and I can not put one specific item ahead of the rest.  I like to stay engaged and support all areas of focus in Rotary and continue to encourage all that there is something for everyone and the place to get it is through joining your local club and become a member of Rotary International. Being a member will open opportunities that you never knew were available in order to again Change Lives, Change Others as well as most importantly Change Yourself!"Together, we make amazing things happen!"

SPECIAL DISTRICT CONFERENCE EDITION

BRENDA TIPTON'S INSIDE SCOOP

This month Rotary celebrates our youth and their amazing accomplishments. During Youth Service Month, please take the time to showcase your sponsored Rotaract and Interact clubs and their projects. Invite them to a meeting so that they can share their activities with your members and make sure to support their projects by your attendance and contributions!  These young people are the future of Rotary and the future of the world.

I'm proud to announce that our Annual District Conference Celebration “All About the Clubs” will also have a strong youth emphasis.  As your honored Governor for 2021-2022 or as I like to say,  your CEEO “Chief Encouragement and Excitement Officer,” I am very excited to share more details about our District 6380 Conference Celebration coming up in Novi Michigan on Friday, May 20th at Paradise Park Amusement Center and Saturday, May 21st at the Suburban Showplace Collection. See article later on in this newsletter to register.

This year my focus has been to Engage, Excite and Have Fun and our upcoming conference focus will be no different.  Rotarians, you have worked hard this year to be innovative and have adapted well during this prolonged pandemic while leading with an emphasis on  Serving to Change Lives.  Join us at the conference to celebrate the results!

FOOD, FUN, BEER & CORNHOLE
At least 60 members and their guests joined in the first Rotary Social Event of the year last Friday at Abberant Ales. Sheriff Mike Murphy was seen drinking a pint of Kon Artist. Liliana Fleming was paired up with yours truly, and crapped out in the first round with a score of only 3. [I used to be better at it, but forgot I have arthritis in my throwing shoulder.]

Thanks to Jim Watters for organizing this event and for Serv-Pro for sponsoring our semi-annual social event.
Thanks to Jim W, Linda C, Chad S & the team for setting up a fun social event for the club.  Jamie Nicholson grabbed a few photos that highlight some of the fun and tell a story or two.

MEET NEW MEMBER LORIE BELCHER
Lorie Belcher was inducted into the club last Friday. This is her story.
It was once said by Helen Keller, “Alone we can do so little; together we can
do so much”. When I think of Rotary and what it means to me and why I wanted
to become a part of it I think of the influence one can have in their community
working with other like-minded, motivated, and kind, caring individuals as a team.

I have always been the type of person to seek out ways to serve others,
lend a hand, volunteer my time, and just be involved for the betterment of myself
and others. I feel being involved in such organizations like Rotary shows
leadership and good citizenship. It gives me a sense of added value.
Why did I want to be a Rotarian?

To start with I am a social person; I love to
interact with others and learn about their stories. Secondly, I have raised two
awesome kids that are now living on their own. I have a job that I love and I find
that I have many, many blessings in my life. I have the time and the desire to use
my “extra” time in serving my community. Lastly, I want to give back to my
community and participate in the growth of where I live.

When my kids were in elementary school I absolutely enjoyed the time I spent as part of the PTO. I was
also that mom that spared the time to be “team mom” of their recreational sports
teams. It kept me involved with the school/sport, the teachers/coaches, and
other students/athletes and I loved the influence I was showing my kids. The
importance of bettering yourself while helping others is a great feeling. I created
fantastic friendships through those involvements.

The time I spent volunteering and being actively involved actually helped me in my small business as well. I
genuinely did not even realize the connections I was creating over the years that
eventually led me to potential clients with my photography business.
To sum it up, I want to be a Rotarian to help me become more involved in
servicing the community I live in, help with local projects, network with other
members, contribute in fundraising efforts, create leadership skills, and just grow
as an individual. I believe working with this group of Rotarians will continue to
inspire me to do more for others.

~Lorie Belcher

THE UKRAINIAN WAR AND ROTARY

It is a tragic and sad time for the people of Ukraine and the world.

Many of you may not have remembered and/or even known but we have very close Ukraine ties to RI CEO John Hewko through our District and the Rotary Club of Clarkson .  Our District assisted in planting the seed 30 years ago to help sponsor the 1st Kyiv Rotary Club in Ukraine.

Because of these past District connections Mr. Hewko is suggesting we all channel efforts to the RI  Disaster Response Fund until 30 April 2022. RI will  then put a report together about all the donations  from RC Kyiv co-sponsor Districts/Clubs. He sees it as a demonstration of Rotarians from different Districts, Clubs and Countries coming together again collaborating to help Ukraine.

Today, our thoughts are with our fellow Rotary members and others in Ukraine coping with these tragic events. Rotary International will do everything in its power to bring aid, support and peace to the region.

As one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations, we have made peace the cornerstone of our global mission and I thank you all for your continued efforts to Serve to Change Lives.
