Happy New Year to all!
2020 is behind us and hopefully most of the challenges it brought. I'm sure many of us are still recovering from holiday doings as well. I'm grateful to have had time with my family despite my house looking like the aftermath of a cat 5 hurricane.
I hope you and yours, whether together or apart, enjoyed the holidays. It's about time for us to get together again! Virtually still, but I'm glad we're able to do it. This Friday we're looking forward to hearing from member Jim Johnston. Jim has been a member for almost 2 years and has been a a great addition to our club. Join us as we hear Jim's personal story this Friday.
See Zoom link below. See you bright and early Friday a.m.!

JAN. 6th BLOOD DRIVE CANCELLED
First the good news. We had all 50 slots filled with anxious donors, some coming from as far away as Hartland and Pinckney. Now the not-so-good news. The Red Cross had to cancel the blood drive after 90 minutes because it was too cold. Even though the boiler had been serviced three weeks ago, a faulty circuit board would not allow the heat to stay on. With some emergency portable heaters, the temperature rose S-L-O-W-L-Y from a brisk 44 degrees F to 58.8 degrees. Equipment doesn't work properly unless the temps are below 59 and above 85. Would YOU want a phlebotomist sticking a needle in your arm when she is shivering from the cold?
We will attempt to re-schedule sometime in the spring, but will need more involvement and commitment from the other Rotary Clubs in Livingston County. Thanks to Howell Rotary for sending us volunteers and for Janet Burns stopping in at 1 pm to help close down the drive.
AND THE WINNER OF FANTASY FOOTBALL IS...
Brenda Tipton's team, Woo-Woo's Rumble defeated Dianne McCormick's Golden Girl in the finals to win the Pobuda Scholarship FunD Fantasy Football Trophy.
Jim Watters' Bone Crushers finished third and defending Champ Terr Defina's Tackler finished fourth. We raised $350 for the Don Po9buda Memorial Scholarship Fund. The awards banquet, trophy presentation and football jersey distribution will take place as soon as it is safe to congregate. [I just made that last part up, Jim.]
KINDNESS FOR HOT COCOA FUND-RAISER WARMS MANY HEARTS
Thank you to everyone who supported our POP UP fundraiser for Michigan Humane - Livingston County one Sunday in December, by raising more than $500! With help from her family, Livingston Sunrise Rotaract member Karli Soraruf had the heart and vision to set up an ADORABLE, holiday-themed photo booth WITH hot cocoa, collecting donations - a TRUE "service above self" project for Rotary! [She has RUF in her name, too!]
And, thanks to the help from Mayor Nick Proctor (Howell Rotary) and Community Development Director Tim Schmitt and his team at the City of Howell, arrangements for the location in Peanut Row worked out perfectly. We had a great turnout with lots of dogs and families that were out supporting small businesses downtown. One passerby, Kara, was SO EXCITED she showed us photos of her dog, Molly, took a picture of the booth AND promoted it on the Facebook group, Howell/Brighton Area Mom to Mom . One couple even used the booth to take photos to announce their BABY ON THE WAY.
People were asking that the booth be set up for NEXT YEAR, please!! So many were just plain happy to support Michigan Humane, get a cup of cocoa or enjoy the Christmas music playing. And, it didn't hurt to have Karli's friend Pat around with his ADORABLE puppy, Ranger. We remember Alexandra... who was out shopping, saw the pup and asked to have her photo taken at the photo booth with RANGER!! CUUUTE! --Jamie Nicholson
