GREETINGS FROM PATTIE COURTNEY, OUR LSRC Prez

Top O' the Morning to you all! đźŤ€

A special Irish greeting to you!  I hope you enjoyed all your favorite St. Patty's day traditions.  Don't forget to don your green before this Friday for our ZOOM meeting..

Please join us this Friday as Mark Robinson presents Laurie Russell & Sarah Kremhelmer with Livingston County FAKS â€“ Fostering through Community Connections. Laurie and Sarah are the co-chairs of FAKS and will provide an overview of the services provided to foster and adoptive parents in Livingston County.

Upcoming Club Assembly is March 26th.  What's a Club Assembly you may ask?  We do things a bit differently during Assembly meetings.  We'll hear from some of our leadership team and catch up on some of the background doings of the club. It takes several members to oversee and run a Rotary Club smoothly. We have a great team of dedicated folks and I'm so grateful to each one.

We will also be presenting our Golden Roty Award!  Please submit your nominations to me by March 24th. Maybe there's someone in the club you'd like to show your thanks and appreciation to. Or someone who could use an "atta boy/girl" for extraordinary service above self.  This is your opportunity.  In addition to the coveted Golden Roty trophy; the recipient will receive a special gift selected just for them. Who will you nominate?

E-Race the Stigma is coming up this weekend.  March 21st 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  See Jamie Nicholson's email or our club newsletter for more information.

I leave you with this Irish blessing today...

"May peace and plenty bless your world
With a joy that long endures
And may all life’s passing seasons
Bring the best to you and yours."

What is FAKS?

Foster Care, Adoption and Kinship Care Services
The Livingston County Foster Care, Adoption and Kinship Services (FAKS) Workgroup is made up of foster parents and representatives from local organizations dedicated to offering safe and supported placements to children that are not living in their family home.  FAKS works with families in the county that open their homes to children from other families by being foster parents.  FAKS also assists families who are interested in adoption.

Workgroup Goal
To increase and retain licensed family foster homes by providing focused outreach recruitment strategies, timely and effective training, and creative, meaningful supports that will meet the diverse individual, developmental, emotional, and cultural needs of foster children and the foster parents caring for them.

Partnership
Success of the FAKS Workgroup depends on the on-going commitment of Livingston County Agencies, Organizations, Local Government and the parents and families themselves.  Each member demonstrates their commitment to the goals by signing a membership agreement on behalf of themselves and their organizations.

Connect to services through FAKS
-Long and short term placements                  -Educational services
-Training and support group services           -Casework Services
-Counseling services                                     -Guardian ad litem/attorney services
-Respite placements                                      -Small uncovered expense reimbursement

Families are needed
Children may come into foster care due to abuse, neglect, or delinquency. The goal of foster care is to reunify and strengthen families. When efforts to reunify children with their birth parents are unsuccessful, the court makes these children eligible for adoption. Children may be adopted by their foster parents or by other families who wish to adopt. Foster parents are also needed to provide shorter term respite care for children.

Support and contacts
Foster parents are provided reimbursement for the cost of care as established by the State of Michigan.
There are many agencies to assist with foster care and adoption cases. These organizations include:
Liv. Department of Human Services (517) 548-0233
Livingston Catholic Charities (517) 545-5944
Livingston County Court (517) 546-1500
Orchards Children’s Services (248) 258-0440
Growing Hope through Love (517) 798-4020
Family and Community Services (517) 615-1275

LSRC FOUNDATION AWARDS GRANT
Your Livingston Sunrise Rotary Foundation recently sent a $1,000 Grant to the Guatemala Literacy Project.
We received the following Thank You from GLP.
Jim Gilmore
LSRF Secretary

Dear Janet Burns and the Rotary Club of Livingston Sunrise (Brighton):

On behalf of GLP Advisory Board Chair Colin Thacker, thank you very much for the Rotary Club of Livingston Sunrise (Brighton)'s generous contribution to Guatemala Literacy Project Global Grant #2124415. Your generosity will make possible a better education and a brighter future for many schoolchildren in impoverished Guatemalan communities. Because these programs are self-sustaining, your gift will keep on giving year after year as new students are helped each and every year in perpetuity.
And pending approval by The Rotary Foundation, your club’s contribution will be multiplied up to 2.8 times by the Foundation on Global Grant #2124415!
After the project inaugurations in February of 2022, your club will receive a full report, including thank you letters from some of the students that you have helped.

We look forward to keeping you and your club informed about the projects after our deliveries next February. Thanks again for all your support!

Sincerely,
Jessica

We don't need as many volunteers as before, so I will be asking help from all local Rotary Clubs. Thank you Howell Rotary for being the first to volunteer!

WORK SKILLS CORP VIRTUAL HOUSE WARMING
Their new group home will be finished in March to provide a safe and comfortable place for individuals with intellectual disabilities or autism.
Many are currently living more than an hour away from friends, family and other support networks.

So much is needed to prepare the house to make it a home... 6,700 square feet...six private bedrooms with an attached bathroom, a community kitchen, and two family rooms.
Help us make this house a home!

What do they need? Everything! Dishes, silverware, glasses, pots & pans, small appliances, linens for kitchen, bed & bath, rugs, shower curtains, therapeutic/sensory recreational items... how about a bbq gas grill?
Take a look at their Wish List on Amazon and select a gift:

Getting to Know You - Michael O'Brian
Meet Michael O'Brian, a recent inductee of Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club

Where are you from?  Grew up in Northville and Graduated from Northville High School

Are you involved in any other groups or organizations? Most of my involvement is in work related.  I am a board member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and a past president in the Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs.

What do you do professionally? I am the Fire Chief for the Brighton Area Fire Authority and also own a consulting firm Code Savvy Consultants, as well as half owner of Kensington Valley CrossFit in Brighton.

Family? Pets? I have two beautiful children who attend Brighton High School (Elliott and Amy)

What is one of your super-talents? I enjoy making videos when I have time.

What’s your favorite book? I have really worked to increase my reading over the last couple of years. Getting Things Done by David Allen, [$18 from 2 Dandelions Book Shop] is a staple for me professional, and Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink is pretty core to me. [Hardcover, $28.99 ]

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?   About 20 years ago, on the first Sunday after New Year’s Day, our pastor at our church in Dearborn was sick.  I was an elder at the time, and had to fill in and preach for the day. After that Sunday, the church and the EPC had a full court press for me to become a pastor.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?   If you want to influence change, you have to show up. I think this applies to things that are important to you, but in general it applies to everyday life. If you want to get in shape, you have to show up to the gym, consistently. If you want to change the world, you have to show up daily.

What would you do if you suddenly won $1million?  Take care of my kids’ education and set aside some funds for their first house. Most likely pay down my parents’ house, and go on a vacation. Maybe even buy some more workout equipment.  [For personal use or for Kensington Valley Crossfit?]

What was the worst job you ever had?   I enjoyed the people I worked with, but that summer installing roofing was a hot job to do.

What’s your favorite type of music?   Live Music.  I am a sucker for live concerts of all types.

Favorite bar or restaurant before CoVid?  I am a sucker for most of the restaurants in Downtown Brighton. I do love some food. [So that means Michael we'll see you at the summer concerts at the Brighton Millpond every Sunday July 11 - August 29, sponsored by the Brighton Kiwanis Club.]

Favorite Artist or Band?   Metallica [Who woulda thunk THAT?]

What is the perfect breakfast for you?  There is this great place in La Jolla Shores in California.  They have the best breakfast. But maybe that’s the sun shining on your face.
