GREETINGS FROM PATTIE COURTNEY, OUR LSRC Prez
Greetings gang!
Looks like March is coming in like a lamb rather than a lion huh? I'm not complaining though. I hope you're able to enjoy it!
Friday's coming and I'm ready to see all your smiling faces. We had a great turnout of almost 40 folks last week. Let's do it again!
This week, AnneRennie will be presenting NicoleMatthews-Creech, President of the Livingston Diversity Council. Nicole has worked with LACASA for over 15 years and currently works with multiple schools and other organizations to help bring greater awareness and understanding of our diverse community and culture. Please join us and welcome her!
Nicole has lived in Livingston County since she was 10 and graduated from Brighton High School. She left the county to get her undergraduate and graduate degrees. She has a Masters in Family Life Education from Western Michigan University. She started with LACASA in 1998 [nearly 25 years ago!] as a helpline advocate, while she was still finishing her Master’s degree.
In 2001 she took the position of Community Education Director at LACASA and remained there with various title changes until February 2021 - much of her work was focused on education and systemic change. She joined the Livingston Diversity Council's Board of Directors in 2010 and was elected President of the Board in 2011, now serving her fourth term in a volunteer capacity.
The Livingston Diversity Council (LDC) was established as a non-profit corporation in 1987 by a group of concerned community members in response to crimes of hate and racism in our County. She joined the Council ten years ago and is still there today because she believes our community is capable of doing amazing things.
She has been married for 21 years and has three kids, ages 9, 11 and 13. Due to CoViD-19, she has made recent changes to her household, because this virus impacts their home health care aides. Her brother, diagnosed with cerebral palsy, stays with them several days per week. This is yet another reason she has passion to address needs in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion and access.

TEAM ROTARY GO!
Ramesh Iyer, Jake Larioza and Jamie Nicholson represented Livingston Sunrise Rotary/Rotaract Clubs on Saturday, March 6th in the Michigan Adventure Race- Winter Edition at Camp Roger in Rockford. Jake's team took 2nd place!! Participation in the event supported the Acorn Fund at Camp Roger giving financial aid to assist in covering the cost of summer camp. LSRC's generous giving will help to make outdoor experiences a reality for more children.
The idea behind Team Rotary GO! is to GET PEOPLE ACTIVE and SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY! While we are doing that, we are promoting Rotary, inviting others participating in the events to join our club, etc.
Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club Board Members recently voted to give Team Rotary GO! financial support from the club (kinda like a KICKSTARTER campaign) to cover half the costs of our initial orders of team apparel, in addition to matching entry fees and fundraising efforts from team members. By the end of our Rotary year (June 30th), the team can establish a budget, and come up with a plan to build sponsorship/sustainability for 2021/2022.
And the visibility is evident. At the event on Saturday, people were asking about Team Rotary GO! "What is Rotary?" and at least one person (maybe two) is (are) now looking into joining Rotaract.
ROTARY CHALLENGE BLOOD DRIVE IS 3/31/2021
There is another blood collection service operating in Michigan... Michigan Blood, now known as Versiti. (This is NOT sponsored by the RED CROSS!)
They provide an improved experience for blood donors, we we're going to try them out. You may donate whole blood until February 3rd to be eligible for this Livingston Rotary Club Blood Drive Challenge. We don't need as many volunteers as before, so I will be asking help from all local Rotary Clubs. Thank you Howell Rotary for being the first to volunteer!
Their new group home will be finished in March to provide a safe and comfortable place for individuals with intellectual disabilities or autism. Many are currently living more than an hour away from friends, family and other support networks.
So much is needed to prepare the house to make it a home... 6,700 square feet...six private bedrooms with an attached bathroom, a community kitchen, and two family rooms.
Help us make this house a home!
What do they need? Everything! Dishes, silverware, glasses, pots & pans, small appliances, linens for kitchen, bed & bath, rugs, shower curtains, therapeutic/sensory recreational items... how about a bbq gas grill?
Take a look at their Wish List on Amazon and select a gift:
Meet Michael O'Brian, a recent inductee of Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club
Where are you from?Grew up in Northville and Graduated from Northville High School
Are you involved in any other groups or organizations? Most of my involvement is in work related. I am a board member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and a past president in the Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs.
What do you do professionally? I am the Fire Chief for the Brighton Area Fire Authority and also own a consulting firm Code Savvy Consultants, as well as half owner of Kensington Valley CrossFit in Brighton.
Family? Pets?I have two beautiful children who attend Brighton High School (Elliott and Amy)
What is one of your super-talents?I enjoy making videos when I have time.
What’s your favorite book?I have really worked to increase my reading over the last couple of years. Getting Things Done by David Allen, [$18 from 2 Dandelions Book Shop] is a staple for me professional, and Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink is pretty core to me. [Hardcover, $28.99 ]
What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?About 20 years ago, on the first Sunday after New Year’s Day, our pastor at our church in Dearborn was sick. I was an elder at the time, and had to fill in and preach for the day. After that Sunday, the church and the EPC had a full court press for me to become a pastor.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? If you want to influence change, you have to show up. I think this applies to things that are important to you, but in general it applies to everyday life. If you want to get in shape, you have to show up to the gym, consistently. If you want to change the world, you have to show up daily.
What would you do if you suddenly won $1million? Take care of my kids’ education and set aside some funds for their first house. Most likely pay down my parents’ house, and go on a vacation. Maybe even buy some more workout equipment. [For personal use or for Kensington Valley Crossfit?]
What was the worst job you ever had? I enjoyed the people I worked with, but that summer installing roofing was a hot job to do.
What’s your favorite type of music?Live Music. I am a sucker for live concerts of all types.
Favorite bar or restaurant before CoVid? I am a sucker for most of the restaurants in Downtown Brighton. I do love some food. [So that means Michael we'll see you at the summer concerts at the Brighton Millpond every Sunday July 11 - August 29, sponsored by the Brighton Kiwanis Club.]
Favorite Artist or Band?Metallica [Who woulda thunk THAT?]
What is the perfect breakfast for you? There is this great place in La Jolla Shores in California. They have the best breakfast. But maybe that’s the sun shining on your face.
You can enjoy a meal with local Rotarians every day of the week:
Monday - Lunch - Howellat Howell Board of Education Room at the Administration Building (on Highlander Way)
Tuesday - Lunch - Brightonat the Brighton Community Building (aka the Boy Scout Building)
Tuesday - Lunch - Lyon Area at Abbey Park at Mill River...off Milford Road, south of I-96, across from Coyote Golf Club
Wednesday - Lunch - Fowlerville at First United Methodist Church on 2nd Street
Thursday - Breakfast - Hartland Rotary Club, at the Hartland Insurance Agency (Old US 23, just north of M 59).
Thursday - Lunch - Novi at Suburban Collection Showcase
- NOON - Milford Rotary Club, Bakers at Milford, 2925 S. Milford Road
Take the opportunity to see other clubs, meet other Rotarians and see how they do things. These count as "Make Up" meetings if you can't attend your regular weekly club meeting.
