THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM IS...
The dedication of the PEACE POLE on the grounds of L-E-S-A.

On Friday, June 17, 2022, Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club will install a Peace Pole, the most prominent international symbol and monument to peace, at Livingston Educational Services Agency, 1425 W. Grand River, Howell, in honor of Livingston Sunrise Rotary member and current Rotary 6380 District Governor, Brenda K. “WooWoo” Tipton, for her outstanding service to Rotary and the community. The community is invited to join Rotary Club members and guests in dedicating the peace pole in recognition of the common desire for peace in our world.

The Livingston County community will stand with over 250,000 Peace Poles throughout the world, which are all inscribed with the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth”, to demonstrate a commitment to peace and remind ourselves to think, speak and act in a spirit of peace. Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club is one of over 46,000 clubs around the world inspired by Rotary International to collective action and community engagement for world peace as well as our future peacebuilders – the children.

How fitting that the new Peace Pole will be “planted” at a center of learning! “So many of our Club members and friends throughout the community are deeply concerned with the unrest in the world”, says Club President, Jamie Nicholson. “This dedication is a welcome and important opportunity to promote peace in the world and peace in our hearts.” The dedication ceremony will take place at 8:00 a.m., near the main entrance of the LESA building, rain or shine. No RSVP is required. We hope to see you there.

20 QUESTIONS WITH BRENDA TIPTON

BrendaK Tipton is a past-president of the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club and is the current Governor of Rotary District 6380. Her reign... uh, rule... er...TERM ends June 30th. We thought we would ask her some of the questions you might ask. This will be a multi-part article over the next few weeks.

17.  What is the hardest thing about being a woman leader in Rotary?

I personally stumble sometimes with being accepted by men and being supported by women. It’s not only the hardest thing in Rotary but in our world. It fits into the 80/20 rule where the 20% really have an effect on me as a leader, my personal self, and sometimes my actions.

I tend to want to please everyone and I truly know that will never happen. I do however take each of those challenges and look to them as an opportunity to grow and change or sometimes maybe not at all. I don’t try to change one’s personal views but I try to lead by example by being communicative, always readily available and approachable in order to maybe change their perception of me as a woman and as a truly qualified leader of this District.

I’m not gonna hold back, but as a woman and most importantly a leader in this District I’ve been targeted, ganged up on, lied to and had to deal with disrespectful Rotarians... but again each encounter opens opportunities and I have accepted these types of challenges when I accepted and took on this Governor leadership position as a women leader in Rotary whether the outcome is good and sometimes uncomfortable.

18. What are the keys to having a vital, engaged, involved and fun club like LSRC? (Especially before dawn on Friday mornings)

My theme this year was Engage, Excite and Have Fun! WooWoo!! By engaging the clubs with a common passion in putting service above self.  Exciting the members by offering options to bring awareness and help others and most of all making sure that everything we do is geared to have fun even faced with community and world crisis.  After all we are forever bonded by our passion for service.  LSRC is a unique club and I am so lucky to be a part of it.  Most people in the District can and should take some pointers from the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club based on it overall vitality. I continually urge as many outside members to visit LSRC just once to experience what I know is the reason why I’m in and stay in Rotary..

RANDOM THOUGHTS
As an editor, I see things differently. Ways to tighten up writing to make it clearer. So shouldn't we just have a THREE-WAY Test?
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR and will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

It's Rotary Foreign Exchange Student time!  One kid is on her way to Germany. Three or more students will be on their way to Howell, Brighton and Pinckney. Look for a full report next week (I hope).

ROTARIANS in ACTION JUNE 2022
THE FIVE AVENUES of SERVICE in ROTARY

We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity.
  • Club Service focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan.
  • Vocational Service calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society. Learn more in An Introduction to Vocational Service and the Code of Conduct.
  • Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest. Learn more in Communities in Action: A Guide to Effective Projects.
  • International Service exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and understanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more.
  • Youth Service recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs such as InteractRotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange.

Who can think of a specific example of how you, or any Rotarian, has applied the ideal of service in your/their personal, business or community life?

MITT 2022 WAS A SUCCESS!
Some highlights. More than 350 bid on items. Sponsors donated more than $100,000 to make the event successful for our charities. LIVE auction sales generated almost $42K. And the silent auction and the card game generated another $14K.

The two charities (REACHING HIGHER and SPECIAL MINISTRIES) each received giant $20,000 checks from the Foundation Treasurer. Roger quipped, "that's the most legible I've ever seen Jim's signature!" Next year's Midnight in the Tropics will be held.at Crystal Gardens on the evening of ??????  The 2022-2023 MITT beneficiaries selection process and application will be on the bottom left of the club's website in the next few weeks.

However, applicants will first be judged if their program of project is in alignment of the focus areas of LSRC and the Foundation. Currently, there are two. 1. Youth and Families in Crisis   2. Community Addiction Programs and Services

Thanks to those selfless individuals who put service above self and their money where their heart is. This club raised $7,000 for Ukrainian Relief through the Rotary International Foundation. That money was matched, so $14,000 will now go to help refugees and those countrymen who need help the most.
