🤩  WEEKLY WORD from THE PRESIDENT đź¤©
CAN YOU OPERATE A SMART PHONE?
[Then you can run the iPad which controls the ZOOM meeting. We need two more persons and one backup for technical support. Yes, you will make mistakes. No, we won't yell at you. We might make fun of you, but that's to be expected. Here's Jamie!]

A BIG "thank you" to both Mike O and Anne R for their willingness to take on MORE jobs for the club- Friday Tech Help with the Zoom component of our LSRC meetups.  Mike already works on the LSRC website, and Ann already handles the filming for our live broadcasts on Facebook.

All of you know how this goes... many hands make light(er) work.  WHO ELSE will step up?  I've been asking out loud at the meetups since July 9.

You don't need a computer science degree to do this- just familiarity with using a digital tablet, Zoom and the capability to handle a SNAFU from time to time. If this is not Y
OU, then invite someone in the club that you know can do the job OR fill out a Member Proposal for that person you know in the community, and get that process started. Right??   Each One Bring One.

This technology is a wonderful benefit to our members. The LESA staff are giving up their Friday mornings to help us. Let's give back.

Thanks!

Yours truly,

  Jamie

HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE CLOSE TO THE POVERTY LINE?
Thanks to a presentation by Liz Welch last week, we know that about 24% of the working families in Livingston County struggle to make ends meet. Some of us are just one paycheck away from disaster.

Here's what the ALICE Project survey recently revealed. That stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. The working poor.

The county level data found 24% of households in Livingston County still struggled to make ends meet in 2019, prior to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.  The County level data can be found at this link - http://neuepro.com/county-profiles/michigan

The numbers for the state of Michigan can be easily found on the above link, as can other counties in the state.  Livingston County ALICE numbers show a slight improvement over the 2017 numbers with a slight decrease from 26% to 24%.  This trend is encouraging and would mean numbers were on the right path, except this data does not include 2020 and the impacts of CoViD-19.

“Ihe reality is that residents were struggling even before the pandemic hit,” said Anne Rennie, Executive Director, Livingston County United Way. “CoViD impacts in our county can be seen in the number of people who reached out for support, like food, cash assistance and unemployment.  This will inevitably impact the next year’s reports as many industries were closed for 2020 and are slowly getting back to work for 2021,” she said.

According to the report, 70% of infrastructure jobs in Michigan paid less than $20 an hour in 2019, and 63% of nurturers—those in health care, education and care giving—made less than $20 an hour.  The Senior Survival Budget, another new data point, more accurately represents household costs for people age 65 and over, including housing, technology, transportation, food, and health insurance premiums. The average ALICE Household Survival Budget in Livingston was $25,344 for a single adult, $28,272 for a single senior, and $73,332 for a family of four in 2019—significantly more than the Federal Poverty Level of $12,490 for a single adult and $25,750 for a family of four.  These numbers further highlight the high cost of living in our community and how working families have even larger hurdles to sustain their households here.

From 2007 to 2019, the cost of household essentials (housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, and technology) increased faster than the cost of other goods and services.

The Report concludes with an analysis of the economic benefits if all households had income above the ALICE Threshold—an estimated $98 billion added to the Michigan GDP.

A full description of the Methodology and sources is available at www.UnitedForALICE.org/Methodology.

WHAT'S UP WITH THE LSRC FOUNDATION?
OVERVIEW

For many years, the Club acted like a service club and a charitable organization. Several years ago, the Club and its funds was split into the Club and the LSRF. The reasons were many but the principal reasons were:

1) donors to the Club’s charitable fundraisers could then take a tax deduction by making the contribution to the LSRF, and

2) it avoided the mixing of charitable funds with Club funds which are not charitable in nature. The Club’s revenue and funds are used to run the Club as a service organization, covering such things as meals, dues to RI and District 6380, etc.

The Club and The Foundation each have their own corporate articles of incorporation and bylaws. The two organizations are subject to very different legal rules under Michigan law and Federal law. Each has their own annual budget.

The LSRF makes grants, funds charitable projects, and provides scholarships. The LSRF’s highly desirable tax status as a public charity is dependent upon adhering to a very strict set of rules regulating the organizations that make grants who qualifies for scholarships.
