We will have a special guest this week, via ZOOM: the official annual visit from our District Governor Don "Sparky" Leonard. He is past-president of the Rotary Club of Chatham, Ontario, Canada. Sparky has been to many of our events and is known for driving around in a Rotary District 6380 decal-wrapped Ford, so it is hard to miss him.
I imagine he'll give us an update on our District, how the Rotary100K.org fund-raiser is going to provide 100,000 COVID-19 PPEs for front-line medical workers. (They have reached the halfway point.) I expect we'll hear how well OUR chapter is doing compared with others in District 6380.
Rotarians are people of action. Service above self. But you may have wondered what is happening to the money we pay in dues, now that we don’t meet in person.
Your dues partially help provide the wonderful buffet breakfasts at the Bennett Recreation Center. (It feels like months since we sat down and broke bread together. And it has been!)
Your chapter board of directors has given away more than $6,000 to worthy local charities and groups who could benefit from a donation. These are Special Cash Disbursements to the community to meet immediate needs. Since we're not spending money on breakfasts, our board decided to give back to our local community. Here's where some of that money went:
CC Catering - $400 (Our breakfast caterer, nominated by Jim Gilmore to offset losses due to COVID-19 restrictions)
Feeding our Frontline Heroes - $500 (nominated by John Scott for this local Chambers of Commerce program and Crystal Gardens)
District 6380 COVID-19 Disaster Grant - $500 (Jim Gilmore made the nomination. This seed monday was matched with a D6380 Rotary In'tl Disaster Grant, and the District ponied up an additional $20K. They will purchase N95 masks to be distributed to all hospitals throughout the District. Click the link to make a direct donation; but for tax purposes and to receive a receipt, please donate to the LSRC Foundation)
United Way of Livingston County/COVID-19 Emergency Fund - $2,000 (recommended by Tim Williams)
Farley Hill Food Pantry via The Pinckney Community Foundation - $1,000 (M-36 Clubbers Joelien Soesbe & Rebeck Graham nomination)
If you know of any local charitable organizations or groups greatly impacted by the COVID-19 Crisis and could use a little financial assistance, please nominate them to your LSRC Board of Directors by emailing the request to LivingstonSunrise@gmail.com. They MUST be a 501(c.)(3) non-profit charitable group.
Many of you are helping others in our community...throughout the state...and even internationally. Let us know! And we need pictures, lots of pictures (so I don't have to write another 1,000 words).
For example, the Livingston County Sheriff's Department has been delivering groceries and making prescription medicine runs for the elderly and those who are permanently homebound.
If your group or organization has a need, especially an URGENT one, please let Jamie Nicholson know and she will coordinate a response. Thank you!
