If you do show up, remember the CDC has recommended that EVERYONE wear a mask INDOORS, even if you have been vaxxed AND boosted.  This Omicron variant of CoViD-19 is so contagious, it has created many, many breakthrough infections, even with people who have had CoViD-19 before. Masks, however, are NOT mandatory, but highly encouraged for Rotary Club members and their guests.  Feel free to social distance as well, and 12 feet apart is safer than six feet.

📚   CLUB FOCUS ON LITERACY
As a secondary math teacher for 25 years, I have a serious interest in the value of education. The movement in LSRC that increases opportunities for community members to improve their reading abilities is one of which we can ALL be proud. Many of us have participated in the distribution of the Little Free Libraries throughout Livingston County, worked with United Way in reading programs with students at elementary schools, contributed to adult literacy programs in the county and now are involved in the Literacy Committee Sunrise Rotary (LCSR). Keep up the GREAT work!

WHAT IS A VETERANS TREATMENT COURT?
Veterans treatment court uses a hybrid integration of drug court and mental health court principles to serve military veterans, and sometimes active-duty personnel.  They promote sobriety, recovery, and stability through a coordinated response that involves cooperation and collaboration with community and state-wide partners. Veterans Treatment Courts also rely on U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs health care networks, the Veterans Benefits Administration, volunteer veteran mentors, and veterans and veterans family support organizations.

You COULD BE an OFFICIAL GREETER
Greeters should arrive BY 7:15 AM and assist members to set up,  hand out name badges, welcome guests and identify visiting Rotarians. Smile!

Have you ever seen so many people wearing PLAID?  All I know is that Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (according to Steve Martin anyway). Sally Harvey challenged the fine sheriff Steve Gronow to pay $5 for every person who wore plaid closthing to our January 28th meeting. Well, he paid out an additional $100 in fines... but members matched his contributions by another $130!  ["Does that mean I get a refund?" asked Steve. Uh, that would be a NO.

WHAT'S THE STORY ABOUT THE CHICKEN BASKET?
Nelson recalls that one of our early LSRC members had a bed and breakfast in Howell on Grand River. [Angie's Inn on the Grand, on the north side , one of the bigger houses with a portico.] We can't or never knew her name but, she offered the basket as a "fines" receptacle. It was accepted willingly as LSRC has the rooster on its LSRC logo. [Really? What logo?]  That's our story and Nelson is sticking to it.  --Lee Halstead, Hartland Rotary Club

HOST A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT 2022-23
Patricia Courtney writes:  "It is my hope that our club will be able to continue the tradition of hosting one of our exchange students. We need your assistance in making this happen. We will need 2-3 good host families for the 2022-23 academic school year.

How about you?  Or possibly you know someone who might enjoy this unique opportunity and experience?  I'd love to talk to you more about it!  Please catch me at club, email or give me a ring.  I'd love to share my own experiences with you."

Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) has enjoyed a long and excellent reputation of creating life-changing opportunities for young people from around the world.

These students learn lifelong leadership skills, experience a new language and culture, build lasting friendships with other students from around the world and truly become global citizens. Students ages 15-19 exchange in more than 100 counties every year.  Each of these students are supported both at home and abroad by local Rotary Clubs.

Our club has been so fortunate to have hosted several of these top notch students the past few years.  Possibly you remember Daniela (Czech Republic), Lea  (S. Korea), Vivi (Brazil) and most recently Gabby (Peru) [pictured above last week in sunny Southern California] and Elias (Germany) [also pictured above].  [Please send them an encouraging email by clicking on their names to the left.] All of these extraordinary young people spent a full academic year with us and we were so blessed to know them.  I’ve enjoyed hearing from them occasionally and how their experience on exchange has truly impacted their lives.

"Together, we make amazing things happen!"

NEWS from ROTARY DISTRICT 6380
Did you know that February 23 is the anniversary of the very first Rotary meeting?  It was held on February 23, 1905, in Chicago, Illinois. [That was 117 years ago, for those from Loma Linda.] February 23 is now designated as World Understanding and Peace Day promoting "understanding and goodwill as essential for world peace."

But, the 23rd is not the only day for advancing peace; the entire month of February is designated as Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention Month.  Every Rotarian should take the opportunity to plan and promote our Fourth Avenue of Service within their circle of influence in support of Rotary's continued quest to promote goodwill, peace and understanding among all world citizens. [Wouldn't you rather prevent war rather than picking up the pieces after a conflict?]

Promoting goodwill, peace and understanding can take many directions.  Recently, our Club Presidents were invited to give an update on their club's goals and service projects during my MidYear check-ins.  For me as your honored CEEO, these meets were educational, uplifting, inspiring and nothing short of amazing!!  To hear about the creative ways our District clubs and members have answered the call for support within your local communities and beyond leaves me speechless.  When reflecting upon what our clubs are doing with local and worldwide service projects which are indeed a part of building peace, I feel proud of our efforts to help others in need. Thank you all!

American and Canadian Rotarians are blessed with many resources.  Your service projects enable us to share the wealth with those less fortunate.  Our District is available to support those projects.  I encourage all clubs to attend the upcoming Grant Seminar on February 26 and to consider applying for a District Grant to expand a local service project.  You might also consider adding an international/global project to your club’s resume to increase your service reach.

February is an important month for Rotarians who will continue to engage in service projects that support peace -- it’s also my birthday month, WooWoo!!  Having the opportunity to serve our District is a wonderful gift that all of you have given me.  I am so grateful for your enthusiastic support!  This year my focus is on our Rotary District 6380 Clubs and members as we continue to find ways to adapt and re-create ourselves while continuing to grow our District.  I urge you all to continue to Engage, Excite and HAVE FUN – WooWoo!!  --Brenda Tipton, Rotary District 6380 Governor, 2021-22.

GLEANERS' CUPBOARDS ARE BARE

Gleaners needs us to help restock the personal care items they give to needy people and families. Tucked away in your bathroom closet, you must have some sample sizes of deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, shaving cream, little bars of soap, hand cream, shaving cream... you know, the stuff you'd pick up at hotels when you used to travel PRE CoViD-19. I don't know about you, but since I bought a Sonic toothbrush, I've been accumulating a ton free toothbrushes from my dentist for the last 10 years. Bring those!

If YOUR cupboard is bare, you also can pick up some sample sizes at your local grocery store, Meijers, CVS or Walgreens. Bring them to Friday's meeting and Terry Defina will collect them and give them to Gleaners.

p.s. Bring empty egg cartons! They receive eggs in bulk, but need to put them in protective containers.

Livingston County’s 15th Annual Community Connect will take place on Saturday, February 5th from10am until 2pm at 2|42 Community Church in Genoa Township.
