Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club Meeting 10/21/2022
Click on the link above (or at the bottom) to see the WHOLE BULLETIN!
(You are missing half of the news if you don't.)
We no longer meet via ZOOM so you must come in person. Enjoy food, fellowship and FUN!

Just wanted to give you a heads-up about some upcoming Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club items:

Next Friday, October 21st, we wrap up our "Change for Polio" campaign, so bring your coin or currency to the meeting.  We are trying to raise $550 for polio eradication, and our jar is currently woefully short!

Friday, October 28th, our meeting will be Halloween themed, and "yes", it will feature a costume contest, with a prize for the best costume.  So, no excuses, you have plenty of time to put together a costume!

Sunday, October 30th, SAVE-THE-DATE, to kick back and have a little fun at a family-friendly Club Bonfire, hosted by Mike and Penny Murphy. Further details will be provided.

Friday, November 11th, is Veteran's Day, and we are looking for some ideas to make this our theme for the morning and honor Veterans.  You saw Mike Lenninger's idea in the Bulletin - wear red, white, and blue or your military uniform.  Send YOUR ideas to Connie Conklin, cccconk12@aol.com

Have a fantastic week!

~Donna Gehringer

There should be about $100 in the 50/50 drawing, I guess; 49 cards, if you're counting.  Bring your money; exact change is appreciated! $5 for three tickets or $2 each. All proceeds go toward the the festivities for the 2023 President's Night!

THIS WEEK'S MEETING...
Is with Kevin Mondlock representing the Livingston County Severe Weather Network, which jumps into action every fall to provide warm, safe accommodations at local churches for the area's homeless.  A sort of mobile homeless shelter. A worthy cause, and a timely reminder as temperatures have been in the 30s lately.

The Severe Weather Network (SWN) is a non-profit organization that monetarily operates on donations. They provide guests with transportation to/from the shelter, access to a laundromat, food and various personal care items. They also financially assist guests transitioning into employment and permanent housing.  Please consider making a donation to assist the homeless of Livingston County.  (A receipt will be provided for tax purposes.). DONATE HERE directly to SWN Homeless Shelter.

YOUR VOICES... YOUR CLUB

YOUR VOICES...  YOUR CLUB

The Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club would like to recognize individuals and organizations in
Livingston County who are promoting literacy in our community.

Literacy is defined as being able to read and write, or to having knowledge about a specific subject.
When you read, this an example of literacy. When you are familiar with math, this is an example of
literacy in mathematics. It is a process of understanding by which one expands one’s knowledge in
order to develop one’s thinking and learning for the purpose of understanding oneself and the
world.

The process is fundamental to achieve success in one’s life.

If you know someone or an organization who is making a difference with youth and adults in
Livingston County, please complete and submit the following form to: Livingston Sunrise Rotary
Club, ATTN: Literacy Committee, PO Box 1916, Brighton, Michigan 48116.

ROTARIANS in ACTION ~ OCTOBER 2022
HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR EXCHANGE STUDENT

Our club's Rotary exchange student, Kate (Japan), has arrived and is being hosted by the wonderful Atsalakis family. We typically arrange for two-three host families during a student's exchange year to help broaden a student's experience and share the responsibility.

Unfortunately, her second host family we had in place has had to withdraw due to unexpected family concerns.

So here's where you can help. We are looking for a couple of additional host family candidates for her. They would have to live in the Pinckney school district. Ideally,  we would like to see this move take place after Thanksgiving. And then possibly another family beginning in March thru June 2023.

So, who do you know in the Pinckney area who might have a spare bedroom? I believe if we put out lots of feelers and just make the ask, we can make this happen.  But I need your help.  Please consider how you can help or who you can ask.  Kate is a delightful young lady and we want to make her short time with us as memorable as possible.

Also, if you and your family would like to have Kate join you for a special event or outing, I know she'd love that.  Just let her, me or Courtney know.

Let's make this happen for this young lady!  Thanks guys.

CELEBRATE WORLD POLIO ACTION DAY OCT. 24
In support of World Polio Day on October 24th, District 6380 is rolling out the PolioPlus Society to encourage and recognize Rotarians who help reach the finish line on Polio eradication. In recent months an unvaccinated man in New York was paralyzed, a child in Malawi contracted Polio, and poliovirus was detected in sewage in the UK. We know we can reach a Polio-free world, but only with unwavering continued effort.

Rotary donations to the Polio Fund contiimagenue to be matched 2-1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Rotary commits to raise $150 million to fight polio every year. Our District can help ramp up efforts through our new PolioPlus Society. You can join this society by donating $100 every year to the RI Polio Fund until polio is eradicated.

The PolioPlus Society was started in Oregon several years ago, and later taken up by districts in California. As of December 31st, 2021, they had 4,000 Society members donating $524,000 annually! We in District 6380 are joining the effort. By pledging $100 per year until polio is eradicated, you will be a member of D6380 PolioPlus Society and receive a Certificate, PolioPlus Society lapel pin, and End Polio Now wrist bracelet. Contact PolioPlus Chair, Anne Nauts at anne@annenauts.com, to enroll or to request a speaker at your club.
