Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club and Foundation Surpass $1 Million Milestone in Charitable Contributions

The Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club and Livingston Sunrise Rotary Foundation are proud to announce a historic achievement: over $1 million raised and distributed to support non-profits and service organizations. This milestone underscores the club's enduring commitment to community service since its inception in 2004 and the Foundation’s establishment in 2005.

Since its founding, the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Foundation has dedicated its efforts to improving the quality of life within our community and beyond. A majority of these funds have been raised through the club's signature annual event, “Midnight in the Tropics.” This fun annual event not only brings the community together but also generates crucial support for the club’s selected beneficiaries.

This year’s event, held on March 2, 2024, was particularly impactful. The beneficiaries of the 2024 Midnight in the Tropics were:

Reaching Higher - $50,000
The Torch/Torch 180 - $30,000
Livingston County Catholic Charities Youth Substance Abuse Program - $25,000

Dianne McCormick, President of the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club, expressed her pride in the club’s accomplishments: "Reaching the $1 million mark is a testament to the dedication of our members and the generosity of our community. We are honored to support these vital organizations that make a real difference in people's lives."

At a recent meeting of the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club, a check was presented to the Livingston Hunger Council for $15,725.84. The funds were raised from Livingston Sunrise Rotary’s Annual Hungry Duck Run, which works to raise awareness about local hunger needs. Representatives from Livingston Hunger Council and Livingston County United Way were on hand to accept the check to support food initiatives for local families experiencing food emergencies.

The President of Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club, Dianne McCormick, commented about the gift to the Livingston County Hunger Council. “Service above self is our motto, and our Club is committed to helping those less fortunate in our community. We appreciate all the good work that is done by the Livingston Hunger Council to address food gaps and the hunger needs of our local families.”

The Livingston Hunger Council is a collaborative body made up of a cross-section of the community dedicated to ending hunger in Livingston County. The Council is made up of government agencies, non-profits, local businesses, and private citizens who have committed to making our community a place where everyone has access to the nutritious food they need when they need it.

The Michigan Blueprint to End Hunger, a study released by the Food Bank Council in 2007, identified a 51% gap (5 million meals) in Livingston County – in food available to local families living in poverty. As a result of this study, the Livingston Hunger Council was formed to address these critical food gaps. In December 2009, committees were formed, and the first year’s goal was set – an additional 3.5 million meals by 2010 year-end, with 1.5 million of those meals as a direct result of the Council’s activities.

Through the evolution of the Livingston Hunger Council, many new initiatives have been developed to address specific gap areas. Some of these include the Summer Lunch Bunch program, Community Gardens, Food Pantry Network, Fresh Produce Carts, Homebound Meal Delivery to Seniors, and more.

Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club Celebrates 20th Anniversary

The Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club (LSRC) is proud to announce its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of service, fellowship, and community engagement. This milestone was joyously celebrated over the weekend at a picnic hosted by Steve and Patty Gronow at their Howell residence, bringing together current and former members for a day of reflection and celebration.

Chartered on July 1, 2004, as a Centennial Rotary Club during Rotary International's 100th year, the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club has grown from its original 23 members to 70 as of August 2024. Over these two decades, the club has been a beacon of community service in Livingston County, earning the prestigious Presidential Rotary Club Citation every year since 2005, with the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic.

In 2005, LSRC established the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Foundation, which has since donated over $1 million to nonprofit organizations and service providers, primarily within Livingston County. These contributions, along with more than 16,000 volunteer hours from club members, have significantly enhanced the quality of life for local residents.

LSRC's impact spans a broad range of service areas, with a focus on empowering youth, healing families in crisis, and supporting seniors. The club's community initiatives include organizing the annual Independence Day celebration in Brighton, co-sponsoring the Hungry Duck Run to raise awareness about hunger in partnership with Gleaners Community Food Bank, and hosting the popular Midnight in the Tropics (MITT) fundraising event. The MITT event not only brings the community together for a night of fun but also provides critical financial support to three local non-profit organizations each year.
